This WEEK on "If Music Could Talk"-- Dean McNew and Country Gold-- World music from home! USA - (click picture for better detail)

Special guest (Last Sunday) on "If music Could Talk" (wrir 97.3 FM), Bob Campbell (aka Dean McNew), will be playing rare live recordings (1976!) of his band- Dean McNew and Country Gold-- Live at the Silver Saddle in Des Moines, Iowa.. Heard for the first time on the air- ANYWHERE since the date they were recorded on a second hand reel to reel. In my opinion, this band sounds like what the Grateful Dead based their "American Beauty" era recordings on - country music with lots of soul and a little Rock n Roll. They were a hit not only among young couples who wanted to dance but also truck drivers for miles around who would pack the house every night at Silver Saddle just to hear Dean and the boys play. Once Bob gets the Cd's released (a process im gladly helping with), ALL of the proceeds will go to fight Breast Cancer and provide free mamograms to poor people who cant afford the tests-- Breast Cancer claimed the life of his dear Aunt, Malinda Lou Campbell. And right now, nothing means more to Bob than to be able to dedicate these recordings to his Aunt & donate the proceeds to help fight Breast Cancer.
email Bob Campbell at to get on the mailing list for more info about his CDbenefit and release notification

Music for International Tastes

some of my musical selections were printed in this article in HOMESTYLE- an insert for STYLE (i never got a copy! does anyone have one I could have?) The author, Deveron Timberlake, asked me to recommend Russian, Spanish, and Indian music - for ambience when serving these dishes. What a cool idea! I have always held the opinion that music and food, whether shared among friends.. or total strangers, are two things that can bring the world closer together! (thanks Deveron!)
-- my selections are listed at the bottom

Happy Valentine's Day

Just for fun (and to help a friend and her mother who run a flower business during the holidays), I spent yesterday cleaning flowers and arranging roses in bouquets and vases on Jefferson Davis Highway it was hard work- cold weather and some thorns.. but it was somehow just what i wanted to be doing, since Im not usually such a big fan of Valentine's day. Then i went to sell these flowers downtown at Main and 9th (one of several flower stands around the city.) I was there till sometime after dark at which point i found myself standing alone surrounded by buckets of roses as cars rushed past, questioning the existence of love in a "cold world" (ok, gloomy, i know.. but it was cold!) which is when i saw the elephants... (click picture for a better view)

Apparently the circus is in town. (Or is it always here?) Because out of nowhere, breaking the silence of downtown Richmond at 9 pm, 8-10 Asian Elephants walked up the hill with the ringling brothers "handlers" followed by cop cars, fire engines, street cleaners (for the mountains of what every one of the cars stopped at the intersection would soon witness.. elephant poop) secret agents, more circus animal "handlers", and PETA protesters, who had signs that said "Ringling Beats Animals". Then patiently, quietly, with a full moon overhead, these Elephants marched (were marched) right up 9th street to the Coliseum - followed by the noisy entourage of Police, EMS, and Sanitation vehicles with flashing lights, sirens, and whirring brooms -and the line of stern faced animal rights activists. Then they were gone again.. and ANOTHER pack of full size top volume Fire Trucks roared though as i swept the flower petals from the sidewalk, helped load up the flower buckets and went back home. This was straight out of some Fellini film (La Strada or maybe E La Nave Va?)

Local Latino community members march to the VA General Assembly Building to protest a proposed Bill

The bill would ban illegal immigrants from public colleges and is sponsored by Republican Del. Frank D. Hargrove Sr. of Hanover County.

I heard some of the rally organizers speak on the steps of a church just down from the Richmond Capitol this morning. One man, who asked me to check his spelling of the word "respect" (r-e-s-p-e-c-t [i thought of Aretha singing the letters]) was making posters with the messages (translated)- "Our future generations must be able to go to College", and "No to DISCRIMINATION!" "We want equality and respect" and "we need drivers licenses" (referring to a bill passed by Mark Warner in 2003 banning drivers licenses to illegal immigrants- supposedly to protect from "terrorists") They marched to the General Assembly afterwards, where the proposed bill is being discussed and then voted on.
