If Music Could Talk- Khmer music- Podcast

Last week's show featured more new than old music from Cambodia. Sublime Frequencies and Khmer Rocks have already released so much amazing Khmer music. You can hear in this show, the music from Cambodia continues to grow and change... i tried to play the classic sounds from the 60's and 70's and then bring the new stuff too. Thankfully, there was enough of both to fill a 2 hour show. Actually, there's too much! This music should be playing on the radio all the time!!! That's what inspired the selections in this show-- Khmer music is alive and well... and the classics have not been forgotten either! I personally think it's some of the most beautiful music in the world.

Burning Spear, April 12 2006

I went up to Charlottesville last night to hear the legendary Burning Spear perform with his band at a place called Starr Hill-- the 1.5hr moonlight drive up there was irie...and whoa.. this was an incredible show. to start the night off, i got to meet him cus i notice he's standing right next to me in the crowd! yeah, i know, crazy. i couldnt say anything but "Yo".. shook his hand and he smiles this big smile and laughs. And when he performed, he did all the classics, and some really amazing new stuff too! (opened with WALK from his new album OUR MUSIC- VIDEO HERE) The guy running the soundboard totally had the vocal effects and dub techniques down.. but Burning Spear didnt need any help, his vocals are still smooth, soulful, and beautiful. amazing. A small club , and he sounded like he was singing from a mountain top. I feel truly blessed to have seen this show. Good Vibes.

Video from the Classic Bollywood movie "DON" (1978) starring Amitabh Bachchan

Don - Khai Ke Pan Bana Raswala

by the way, he's eating Betel leaves, called "Pan" (often prepared with candy sprinkles, chocolate sauce, clove, etc) I first tasted it in midtown Manhattan, in a little downstairs market on Lexington Ave - the guy who made it told me "take a BIIIIG bite!!.. you'll LOVE it!" ha ha- it was so strong it made my eyes water and my heart race... and from this video, you can tell that the stuff will make you dance crazy too!! wooo-haaaa!!! classic.
