1960's-70's rock band from the Netherlands (they wrote Venus and Love Buzz.. but their other songs rock too!) Singer Mariska Veres had the original "tough girl" look and a powerful voice to back it up. here's a nice site dedicated to her: http://users.abac.com/gregoryo/mariska/mariska.html

check the video clips here (mirror site) http://users.abac.com/gregoryo/Shockingblue/shockbl2.html

Smita Patil

Smita Patil in a dramatic moment with Rakesh Roshan in the Bollywood film "Aakhir Kyon".

Here is a list of her other films : http://imdb.com/name/nm0665599/
I recommend Mirch Masala ( "Spices" ) if you can find it. In this film, directed by Ketan Mehta, she opened a new door for actresses in Indian cinema, by playing the role of a woman who fights back against male chauvanism- her weapon of choice? hot pepper powder!! (sadly, she passed away in 1986 due to "complications after childbirth" , but her memory survives to this day through her incredible films)

Kitch

Calypso Legend Lord Kitchener

L. shankar- "who's to know" lp- The album cover shown here has a picture of his custom-made, double neck violin. L. Shankar is a master musician- he plays in the Carnatic style - an ancient style of music from Southern India. But he has brought this ancient tradition into the present, giving it his own fiery interpretation (much like Ustad Nusrat Ali Khan did for qawaali music.) He has played with many popular musicians such as Peter Gabriel and FRANK ZAPPA. This lp is one of his finest- fluid and completely beautiful beyond anything i've ever heard.

Charles Mingus- "Beneath the Underdog"

a long time back, i read Charles Mingus' autobiography : Beneath the Underdog: His World As Composed by Mingus (Vintage Books, ISBN: 0679737618) It has actually been years since i read the book, but some of the words and surreal anecdotes resurface in my mind quite frequently. If you've ever heard Mingus' music- its the same... the melodies and rhythms get stuck in your head.. PERMANENTLY.
